The Hot List

What's Happening in Bend This Week

The crocuses, daffodils and tulips are starting to poke their heads through the soil, which can only mean one thing: there's at least one more killer cold wave that'll sweep through the area soon.  Seriously, that's just how it works around here.

So what's on this week's Hot List, besides the obligatory St. Paddy's Day shout-out?

Drake AwardsFriday:
This year's Drake Awards are being held at 10 Below at the Oxford Hotel.  Sounds like fun, but the night doesn't end there! Make sure to bring your dancing shoes, because they've also partnered up with The Blacksmith for a ritzy after-party, where there'll have drink specials, dancing and good times.

For those interested in a little educational edification, the Sunriver Nature Center will be continuing their series of lectures on Charles Darwin and evolution.  Friday's talk is entitled "Evolution of Complexity: Inside Darwin’s Black Box."  Learn the latest research on phylogenomics and the evolution of gene families.  Impress your friends and amaze the neighbors with all the new big words you'll pick up.

The Old Mill DistrictIf you're one of the eight people in the world who missed Avatar in 3-D, you've got one more chance to go see it at the Regal 16 Cinemas in the Old Mill District through the 18th.  Call ahead for showtimes.

Saturday: The local chapter of Healthy Beginnings is holding their Grin and Bear It Run Saturday morning in the old Mill District.  Put on your running shoes for a good cause.  There will be a 5K and 10K race, as well as a one-mile circuit for families.

Also on Saturday, Bend Park & Recreation is hosting the biggest talent show central Oregon has ever seen! Come cheer for your favorite local singers, dancers and more down at the Tower Theatre.  There's over $1000 in cash prizes, can't beat that with a stick.

McMenamin'sWednesday: Faith and begorrah!  What better place to celebrate St. Patrick's Day than at McMenamin's Old St. Francis School, listening to the Sweet Harlots.  Go celebrate St. Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland (which is actually a misconception - he primarily used a 3-iron).

Tower TheatreUpcoming: Local musicians, in partnership with Bend based humanitarian organization World Relief NEXT, will hold The Bend For Haiti Benefit Concert on March 19, 2010. The doors of Bend’s historic Tower Theatre will open at 6:00 p.m. for an evening of hors d’oeuvres and live music that will provide desperately needed assistance to the millions of Haitians still suffering from the devastating earthquake.

The next day, you can catch the Irish Rovers at the Tower, bringing their own special brand of Irish folk music by way of Canada.  Yeah, it's a little past St. Patrick's Day at that point, so just consider it a four-day holiday of sorts.

As a big thank you for being a member of Arts Central, you, your spouse, and a friend can put on your favorite fleece and flannel outfit and enjoy a fun adults-only evening at Art Station on March 19th.  This fun event will feature Arts Central's Artie Awards, entertainment, local cart vendors, prizes, and local beer and wine.

The Sunriver Nature Center will be buzzing on the 20th, the spring equinox, with nature talk on both the changing of the season and Jupiter that evening.  The Nature Center boasts one of the finest arrays of telescopes on the west coast that are open to the public, so it's the place to go for all you astronomy and stargazing questions.
